After winning State Cup in May, 08G NL earned a berth to the USYS Southern Regional Championships in Tampa. The Regional Championships represented the clash of state champions from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. The stakes were high as only one team could win it all and advance to the 2024 USYS National Champions event.
Group play began June 21st with a 1-0 victory over Shreveport United 2008G Blue. The following day, FIERCE fell to eventual Southern Regional Champions MS Rush United 08G Premier. Despite their loss, 08G NL still had the opportunity to advance to playoffs by tying or winning their final game in group play.
The final day of group play kicked off as planned, but after a 0-0 stalemate at halftime the weather took over. The second half of the game resumed 3 hours later with an epic battle of back-and-forth. At full time, the score remained 0-0, which meant FIERCE qualified for the Quarterfinals!
After a day of rest, 08G NL stepped back onto the field against Renegades 08G FDL. FIERCE had a strong start, going up 1-0 early on. Soon after, Renegades responded with a goal, resulting in a 1-1 score at halftime. In the second half, Renegades sealed the win with a second goal, marking the end of FIERCE 08G NL's run for Nationals.
Regarding FIERCE 08G NL's performance, Head Coach Nick Marquez had the following to say:
It was a total team effort - kudos to Ferrer and a resilient backline for two clean sheets, a hardworking and disciplined midfield core, and killer composure from our front line. In our last game, what a dog fight! I am so proud of these girls - they are unlocking new heights, abilities, and emotions, both as a team and as individuals. Also, special shoutout to our new players for looking like seasoned vets despite their first FIERCE matches being at the highest levels.
Although it was not the result FIERCE hoped for, a bit of the pain was removed knowing the only two teams to beat FIERCE at the event went on to compete against each other in the finals. Overall, it was a historical experience for 08G NL that will continue to fuel their growth and development for the upcoming 24-25 season!
